Can Non-Profits Benefit from Solar?

Solar is a great idea for nonprofit organizations who own their facility or have a current lease with at least 10 years remaining in the term. To qualify, you must have exclusive claim to use of the space, including the roof deck. We can be your expert partner and guide your organization through the process of going solar.

Saving money for a nonprofit can be truly impactful. In the short term they can better allocate funds to serve their community. In the long term it means that they can keep a healthy reserve to fund future needs of the organization.

Our most popular option for nonprofits is the Power Purchase Agreement. This program maximizes the cashflow savings and minimizes maintenance and insurance related risks.

It’s set up the exact same way that PSEG and Con Edison purchase power. You’ll pay a fixed rate to us for each kWh and there is a known cost for future energy purchases. If the system you’re hosting doesn’t meet expectations due to weather, you won’t pay for kWh you didn’t receive.

Through this program we’re able to pass on tax incentives that nonprofits commonly cannot qualify for, such as state depreciation and Sec.179 accelerated depreciation.

We also maintain and insure the system. Your organization simply enjoys the savings.

Another option available is system ownership, with the Inflation Reduction Act, this became a viable option for nonprofits. Nonprofits can now take the Investment Tax Credit as a direct payment, so it’s nice to have that option available.

System ownership is best for smaller organizations that don’t need a large system. Often, the nonprofit can hire a grant writing partner and pursue funding opportunities.

Working on a solar project can present an opportunity to take care of facility upgrades with a reduced upfront cost. Many nonprofit organizations that own their own facilities are facing deferred maintenance on roofing, electrical or ventilation systems, sometimes all of the above.

We are able to partner with your organization on a complete overhaul of any of those if you wish.
